The Kalamazoo Case established the right for states to impose taxes on the public in order to support public education.

Otto A. Salomon started to develop a system of woodworking called sloyd, (Sloyd System) which aided children in developing their mental and physical capabilities as well as making useful objects of interest to them. This system of education influenced how manual training, today referred to as technology education, would be taught in the United States.

Francis Parker developed the Quincy Plan in Quincy, Massachusetts. This plan changed the teaching methods of elementary education, focusing the curriculum on activities based upon the needs and interests of the children.
