1956

Nursing and health occupations programs were now eligible for federal funds under the Health Amendments of the George-Barden Act.

1958

The National Defense Education Act passed which provided federal support to strengthen instruction in science, math, foreign language, and any other critical subject. In addition, technical programs, vocational guidance and testing programs, training institutes, higher education student loans and fellowships, and statistical services were all supported by federal funds.

1960

This year marked the beginning of a decade in which the United States Department of Labor directed manpower legislation and employment and training programs.
