The Hampton Institute was established in Hampton, Virginia. The Hampton Institute (HI) was established to provide education to African Americans. Within 10 years the programs also included education for Native Americans. As a manual labor trade school, HI was to provide training in specific trades that are associated with related academic subjects.A famous student of the Hampton Institute was Booker T. Washington. Many of the industrial education practices learned at the HI were influential in Washington's later work at the Tuskegee Institute.

 

Hampton University has embraced the principles of "Education
for life" and "learning by doing," since its founding in 1868
during the days of Reconstruction.
