Horace Mann emerged as a tireless educational reformer. In 1837 he became Secretary of Massachusetts Board of Education. He served as editor of the Common School Journal where innovative educational ideas, practices and improvements were described. In his lifetime, Mann was a major leader in the development of free, public, and universal education for all American youth.
