DISCOVERY RETREAT 2009

The purpose of the Discovery Retreat is to promote environmentalism through the practice of contextual teaching and learnign among teachers and their sutdents. It is our practical and philosophic belief that teachers can play an important role in the preservatin of our environment.We want to provide educators with resources on whale and marine life that can be used to incorporate environmental conservation into every classroom. teachers reach a vast national audience of future consumers and advocates for enviornmental protection on a daily basis.

THE OCEAN ALLIANCE

The Ocean Alliance (OA), which encompasses the Whale Conservation Institute and the Voyage of the Odyssey, is dedicated to the conservation of whales and their ocean environment through research and education. Since it was founded in 1971 by Dr. Roger Payne, OA has educated millions of people around the world through books, films, articles, television documentaries, the IMAX film Whales and other media. THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA

The University of Georgia (UGA) is the oldest publicly charted university in the United States. UGA offers nationally recognized degrees and programs including many in the College of Education.

The Discovery Retreat is a program within the Department of Workforce Education, Leadership, and Social Foundations, which ranked 4th in the nation by the U.S. News and World Report. The Department of Workforce Education, Leadership, and Social Foundations is also recognized nationally and internationally for its work in the development of contextual teaching and learning theories and practices in teacher education.
