New England Fishing & Conservation
New England has been characterized by its industrial fishing sea ports. Gloucester is one of the few remaining ports that are primarily fishing. However, in recent years the fishing productivity has slowed dramatically. It is another version of the spotted owl argument. Fishing and making a living vs. conservation and preservation of fishing stocks.
In recent years eco-tourism industries such a whale watching have begun to make a greater and greater economic impact on the Gloucester area. In our visit to the area we will learn:
- About the history of fishing (fish, crab, lobster, etc). in New England sea ports.
- About the industrial processes of catching, processing, presearving and distribution of sea food.
- About the future of fishing in the region.
- About the future of eco-tourism in the region.
- About the balance between conservation and harvest of sea food.
- About the employment and economic impacts of long-range plans.
- About the social and cultural influences on the people of the region.
