Environmental Education httpAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the world population is expanding at a mind-boggling rate. The world reached 1 billion people in 1800; 2 billion by 1922; and over 6 billion by 2000. It is estimated that the population will swell to over 9 billion by 2050. That means that if the world’s natural resources were evenly distributed, people in 2050 will only have 25% of the resources per capita that people in 1950 had. httpWe fear that our world is becoming more polluted and warmer. Humans, overpopulation, industrial practices, are just a few of the causes of this period of climate change. httpWhile watching whales there is a lot to learn about how we can learn to take more responsibility for a cleaner and sustainable environment. There is much that we can do up-stream to protect oceans and marine life. httpYou will be astounded to see so much trash in the ocean. It has been written that there is enough plastic now floating in the Pacific to cover the state of Texas. Some believe that plastic can take up to 400 years to break down and that 100,000 marine animals die annually from plastic entanglement (Tankha, 2006). Filtered cigarette butts floating in the ocean will not degrade for 15 to 20 years. On any trip to the Stellwagen Bank, you will see hundreds of cigarette butts floating in the feeding water of humpback whales. httpTeachers, students and parents are those who can lead us to environmental change. Help us create educational strategies that promote action from all of the stakeholders. |
